So, let’s look at what we will cover in the next 6 weeks, to smash some myths and take you through some steps, in easy to understand language.

Blueprint for Success

“Luck is not a business model.” Anthony Bourdain

When embarking on a journey, the road can be filled with potholes and wrong turns, so having a map can ensure you stay on track and reach your destination with success and enjoyment. When that journey is taking you into the unknown, a map or blueprint can be what stands between success and failure. This blueprint is something that you’ll change many times over the course of your journey; it’s something you can come back to when you stray off course, and something that will remind you of the goals that you want to reach.

Cash Matters

‘It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.’ John Wooden

During the process of planning your hospitality business, you’ll come to the point where

you need to think about the money you’ll need to get this business started, sustain it in the early days and stay in business in the long term.

You need to figure out how much things will cost. Leasing the premises, the equipment, crockery – all the physical things, but also items like wages, insurances and your suppliers. Once you’ve determined what your budget will be, you need to decide where that money is going to come from.

Will it come from your own personal savings? Will you need to get a bank loan? Do you have someone who’s interested in investing in the business and becoming a partner? And that might be a partner who is involved in the business with you, or a silent partner who will invest money but will have no active part in the running of the business?

Money and finance tend to scare people a little; when embarking on a project of this kind, there’s always going to be some fear that things won’t go according to plan and you’re going to lose your money. But by going through this process and researching what you need, the statistics are way more in your favour.

Get the Look

‘I judge a restaurant by the bread and the coffee.’ Burt Lancaster

First impressions leave a lasting memory, so making sure the look of your business is in harmony with your brand story and food is so important. The look of your foodie business reflects who you are and the passion with which you deliver your food and everything about

your business.

For me, this is great fun; you can visualise what you want your foodie business to look like and start putting all those pieces in place.

Although you have a vision in your head, there’s a certain amount of research still needed so the reality not only looks the way you want, but it works efficiently and effectively as well.

Get Known

‘One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly

stop whatever it is that we are doing and devote our attention to

eating.’ Luciano Pavarotti

You’ve put in so much hard work getting your concept, brand story, menus, kitchen and your whole concept right – now you’ve got to look at how you’re going to sustain your business now that it’s open. How are you going to make sure you attract the right customers, which in turn will make your business grow and give you a profit?

Marketing is an important part of your business and it starts early in the process without you even realising it; the work you’ve done through your business plan, developing your concept and planning the premises has been setting the stage for your marketing further on

down the line.

Stories Sell

‘Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling,

ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your

tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.’ Anthony Bourdain

Anyone can have or develop a brand, but a brand story is more than content or text. It’s a picture you weave with emotions and feelings. A brand story encompasses the facts, together with the feelings that are created for your business. Traditional advertising is about telling people the facts about your business and showing them what you do; a brand story stimulates an emotional reaction.

Jump Start

‘Mother Nature is the true artist and our job as cooks is to allow her to

shine.’ Marco Pierre White

You’ve dreamt about the idea for years – now you’ve done the planning

and it’s time for action.

You’ve taken the first step and by reading on for the next six weeks you will learn enough to help you decide whether you’re ready to take that leap of faith and open your own foodie business.
